When do quail start laying — and how many eggs are normal?
When laying starts, normal egg numbers per week and per year as practical ranges, the course of the laying period and the commonest causes of a decline.
Quail start laying early: most hens lay their first egg between the sixth and the tenth week of life. At peak, a healthy hen delivers about four to six eggs a week in practice, and over a full laying year roughly 200 to 300 eggs, depending on origin, light and feeding. These ranges come from experience and are not a promise: origin, day length and feed shift the result considerably in both directions.
The start of lay
The exact timing depends less on the calendar than on two things: on the line the birds come from, and on the light they grew up under. Birds from stock consistently selected for laying performance start earlier than those where the selection was for colour or weight. Young birds that hatch in late summer and grow into the shortening days start later than those from a spring hatch or from a house with supplementary light.
The beginning is rarely clean. The first eggs are smaller than later ones, sometimes thin-shelled, occasionally without a yolk or with two yolks, and they come irregularly. That is normal and usually settles within two to three weeks. Only after that can you say anything at all about how this flock lays.
How many eggs are normal
Four to six eggs per hen per week is a realistic expectation at peak; individual hens lay almost daily, others stay permanently below that. So never reckon with the best bird, but with the group average, and work it out over at least a week — the daily variation in a small group is so large that a single day says nothing at all.
Over the year, well-run flocks are often in the range of 200 to 300 eggs per hen. That figure applies to the first laying period and assumes a light programme and a layer feed. A group that stands through autumn and winter without supplementary light comes out below it, without anything being wrong.
The course over time
Laying performance is not a straight line but a curve with three sections.
- Rise. From the first egg to full performance usually takes two to four
weeks. During this time the eggs become larger and more uniform.
- Peak. In most flocks it lasts several months, often over the first half
to three quarters of the laying period. During this time the spread is small, and drops almost always have a recognisable external cause.
- Decline. The fall does not come as a crash but as a creeping trend over
weeks. Alongside it the eggs get larger and the shells thinner, and the share of breakages rises.
When it is worth replacing the flock is a matter of arithmetic and not of a rule of thumb. In many flocks replacement happens after about a year of laying, because from then on the feed per egg rises noticeably and the share of breakages increases. Whether that holds for you is decided by your own figures: the group's feed consumption, eggs per week, losses through breakage, and the effort of bringing a new generation up to laying age.
What demonstrably depresses laying performance
Day length and light programme
Light is the strongest lever of all. Laying quail need a long light phase; programmes in the range of about 14 to 16 hours of light a day are usual. Considerably less leads to a decline, considerably more brings no additional benefit and takes the birds' rest away from them.
More important than the exact number of hours is consistency. A shortening takes effect quickly and clearly, a lengthening takes effect slowly. If you change the light programme, do it in small steps and not in jumps. And check the timer regularly: an unnoticed failure explains many a drop for which nobody otherwise finds an explanation.
Feed and changes of feed
Laying hens need a feed with enough protein and above all with enough calcium for the shell; a rearing or fattening feed does not cover that. If you switch abruptly to a different brand or a different batch, intake often falls for a few days, and the laying performance follows. Mix new feed into the old over several days.
Water belongs in the same category. A blocked drinker, a frozen pipe or a drinker line that a high-ranking bird blocks costs egg numbers faster than any mistake in the feed.
Stress and moving birds
Every move reorders the ranking, and the days that follow cost eggs. Putting new birds into an existing group has the strongest effect. On top of that come noise, frequent changes of the people at the house, dogs and cats within sight, disturbances at night and predators at the wire — the last of these you often notice only from the egg count and from startled birds in the morning.
Heat and cold
Heat acts first on feed intake and thereby on the shell: thin shells and more breakage are a typical summer picture. On hot days provide shade, air movement and cool water that is always available. Cold on its own is usually overestimated, as long as the birds sit dry and have no draught; it becomes critical when the drinking water freezes.
Parasites and disease
Mites, feather lice and internal parasites depress performance long before the birds look ill. The signs include restless nights, scratching, dull plumage, pale skin and weight loss despite normal feed intake. Go through the flock and the perches with a lamp in the dark. Diagnosis and treatment are a matter for the vet; remedies given on suspicion cost time and often hit the wrong target.
Moult
A change of feathers costs eggs, because the bird puts its reserves into the feathers. That is a normal process and not a mistake in the husbandry. It shows up as a decline over several weeks with strikingly many feathers in the house.

If you note the collected eggs by group straight away, after a few weeks you have the curve of rise, peak and decline — and with it the only solid basis for the question of replacement.
